What is a High Risk Driver?

cop writing ticketBy now, you probably know that insurance carriers tie your auto insurance premiums to the perceived risk of offering you coverage. Namely, how likely it is that you’ll have cause to file a claim and cost the company money. But did you know that, in some cases, high risk drivers are forced to file for SR-22 insurance, which costs a great deal more than normal auto insurance?

Your independent insurance agent can explain SR-22 insurance in greater detail, but for the purpose of this brief article, all you need to know is that is acts as proof that you do indeed carry auto insurance and it eats a big chunk out of your finances. So who is considered a high risk driver and how can you lower that risk to avoid SR-22 rates?

Tickets and Accidents

One speeding ticket or fender bender may cause a slight increase in your auto insurance premiums, but it’s not likely to cause astronomical differences. However, multiple driving infractions that result in more than six points on your record cause bigger problems, such as your coverage being dropped or even being required to file for SR-22 coverage. Avoid this by following speed limits and driving with safety in mind.

Going Uninsured

Auto insurance is required for all drivers, though nearly 20 percent of drivers go without it. Many insurance companies will refuse you coverage if you cannot provide at least six months of prior continuous coverage. And if the police catch you driving without insurance, you may get slapped with an SR-22 requirement. Avoid this by maintaining auto insurance—and therefore, following the law—at all times.

DUIs/DWIs

Being convicted of a DUI/DWI is serious business and many preferred carriers will drop your coverage. Luckily, there are plenty of carriers that specialize in insuring high risk drivers, albeit for a higher price. But this one is easy to avoid. Simply do not get behind the wheel of a car after drinking; always appoint a designated driver or call a cab.

Credit Score

Insurers look at your credit score as a precursor to the likelihood of your need to file a claim. Generally speaking, individuals with better credit are more responsible and less likely to file a claim. Always keep an eye on your credit report and fix any mistakes immediately to ensure your highest possible credit rating.
