How to Reduce Road Rage

couple driving togetherDriving through rush hour traffic is enough to make anyone irritated. But driving with road rage is dangerous for you and everyone who shares the road. Plus, letting that stress get to you is also bad for your health. Instead, try these tips for reducing that anger and keeping a cool head while driving.

Sleep Well

You’ve probably heard it a million times, but getting a solid night of sleep (at least seven hours) is vital for so many aspects of your health. In regards to driving, waking well rested reduces irritability and increases energy, which helps you stay calmer and more alert on the road.

Plan Your Drive

When you know you need to be somewhere by a certain time, look up how long it will take to get there and tack on at least 10 or 15 extra minutes to account for traffic or other delays. Running late often causes erratic driving behaviors like speeding and weaving lanes. But everyone runs a bit late from time to time. When that happens, simply call your boss, doctor or whoever to let them know you’re on your way. One simple phone call can relieve stress and help you drive safer.

Drive Steady

Driving smooth and steady helps you stay calm behind the wheel. Avoid behaviors like rapid acceleration, slamming on the brakes, changing lanes suddenly (and without blinkers) and more. These actions increase anxiety and irritability. Your movements should be more gradual and intentional.

Listen to Something

Rather than devoting your attention to the fifth jerk to cut you off in the past few minutes, try tuning into your favorite music, an audiobook or a talk radio show. While it’s still important to pay attention to the road, a small distraction adds a pleasant aspect to your commute.

Practice Breathing

If you feel yourself getting angry or upset, take a few deep breathes. The motion of slowly breathing in and out physically calms your body and helps your relax some of the tension you may have been feeling.
