If your family enjoys traveling and camping, it’s natural to save up for an RV so you can build adventurous memories for years to come. But with so many types of RVs available, how do you choose one? Here’s a brief overview of what’s available in today’s market.
- Pop up trailers: This a lightweight, affordable option for families who are newer to camping. While a big step up from a tent, these are still small trailers, ranging from eight to 24 feet.
- Travel trailers: These trailers are relatively small and can be towed behind the family vehicle (so long as it doesn’t exceed the tow capacity). Ranging in size from 19 to 30 feet, some models also have slide out sections for more space.
- Truck campers: With many different floor plans, these trailers sit in the bed of a pickup truck for towing. The benefit over a travel trailer is that you can travel over rougher terrain for camping in more rural areas.
- Fifth-wheel travel trailers: These must be towed by a pickup truck with a fifth-wheel hitch. The perks are more space than conventional tow-behinds and less susceptibility to fishtailing and jackknifing.
- Sport utility RV: These are great if you wish to travel with ATVs or motorcycles because they come equipped with a ramp and storage garage.
- Motorhomes: This category includes RVs that are motorized and therefore do not need towing. There are three main types of motorhomes that vary by size. Remember, being that these vehicles drive themselves, you may wish to tow a car for driving around town and sightseeing.
The vehicle your family selects depends on factors like budget, the towing vehicle required, the size of your family, the types of trips you wish to take, the seasons you wish to travel in and more. Your local RV dealer can help you with more specific information.
And remember, when purchasing a new RV, you must also purchase RV insurance to stay street legal and to protect your investment. An independent insurance agent can help you get started in no time at all.
