Safe Driving in Fog

car driving around roadTips for driving safely in snow and rain are commonly shared. But driving safely in fog is often overlooked. Consider the following tips to keep you and your passengers safe while driving in foggy weather.

Drive Slowly

Slowing down decreases the likelihood of having a collision. If an accident does occur, damage and injuries are likely to be less severe at lower speeds. In foggy conditions, your vision is impaired. It may be difficult to see dangers that lie ahead. To allow time to react, it is best to drive slowly in the fog.

Allow Space

Just as it is important to allow extra space between your car and the vehicle in front of you in icy conditions, it is important to do the same when driving in fog. If the car in front of you has to stop suddenly, you will need time to respond.

Use Low Beams

It may seem that more light would help, but using your low beams is better in the case of fog. Light is scattered by the water droplets in the fog. High beams will scatter more, resulting in more of the light being reflected back at the driver. This actually makes it more difficult to see. Therefore, use low beams for more visibility.

Consider Listening

When you can't see as well, it may be beneficial to use your other senses like your hearing. Turn off the radio and roll down the windows, particularly as you approach an intersection. Use your ears to listen for other vehicles before you proceed if your visibility is limited. Remember, the visibility of other drivers will also be limited.

Stay in Your Lane

Driving through fog is not the time to switch lanes to pass slower moving traffic. Be patient and stay in your lane until the weather conditions improve or you reach your destination.

Car accidents are time consuming, costly and can potentially result in injuries. Taking your time to drive safely in foggy conditions will help reduce the possibility of ending up in a car accident.

Your safety is our priority. Call Auto Insurance Express at (417) 206-3733 for more information on Springfield MO auto insurance.
