3 Ways to Protect Your Motorcycle from Thieves

guy on motorcycleIf thieves don’t see it, they won’t steal it. Sounds simple, right?  Unfortunately, keeping your motorcycle concealed in your garage isn't always enough to thwart thieves who are adamant on stealing your ride. It certainly doesn't stop your bike from getting stolen on the street or from a parking space. So to keep your bike safe, you should invest in the proper security measures. With that said, here are three ways to keep your motorcycle safe from theft.

Conceal Your Bike with a Cover

The less people who can see what kind of bike you're riding and the locks that's keeping it secure, the better. Having a plain and simple bike cover is a basic counter-theft strategy that can be achieved easily. It's also a great way to protect your bike from also rain, snow, bird droppings, sun fading and falling mulberries.

Covers range from a single layer of plastic to five layered waterproof cloths equipped with an inner fleece to protect finishes. Depending on where your motorbike is stored will determine the kind of cover you need. For instance, if you store your bike indoors, a simple dust cover is often enough to conceal your bike from the public's eye.

Lock Your Bike

Motorcycle security options include disc locks, brake clamps, ground anchors and heavy duty chains. As a general rule, you want a security specific chain and lock that can't be cut or opened with liquid nitrogen. Really, it all depends on your bike and how much you want to invest in security.

Most locks provide a basic layer of protection. For instance, padlocks around your wheels will make it difficult for thieves to simply pick up or move the bike. That, and a chain that can fit through your bike and link around a telephone pole or sturdy object, keeps your bike pretty safe.

Equip an Alarm

Even with a cover and the most sophisticated locks, you want to ensure that anyone who touches your bike sets off an alarm loud enough to scare them. In fact, an alarm should always be an addition to your other security measures, rather than a cheap replacement.

Disc lock alarms offer two layers of security for the price of one. Not only does it make your bike difficult to move, but also a sensor detects motion and goes into a warning beep cycle that gradually increases in volume loud enough for you to hear it, if it's not disarmed by inserting the key.

Once your bike is secure, protect your investment with the proper motorcycle insurance. If your bike is ever stolen or damaged, your policy can help cover the expenses.
