How to Prep Your Boat for Bad Weather

boat speeding on waterSpending a sunny day out on the water is a favorite pastime for many boaters. And though we always hope for the best weather, boaters must be prepared for any and all weather conditions. Rough waters and storms can cause damage to your boat, along the possessions stored on your boat, so a bit of preparation is key. If severe weather is forecasted, you likely take precautions around your home, right? Well, it works the same way with your boat.

Whether you plan to be on the water or you’re at home when bad weather rolls in, taking action can save you a lot of hassle. There are steps you can take to protect your boat from major damages. However, you must remember that when it comes down to it, a boat is replaceable and you are not. The safest place to be during bad weather, even if you want to actively protect your vessel, is on dry land in an appropriate shelter.

But we understand the desire to protect your boat when poor weather is forecasted. If time allows before the storm arrives, your best bet is to pull your boat out of the water. But this process can take a lot of time that you may not have if a storm develops suddenly and quickly. In which case, you’re left to prepare as quickly as possible. Here are a few tips for battening the hatches:

Lash impact-absorbing materials (like tires) to the sides of your boat at potential contact points to reduce the risk of structural damages

Drop an anchor or two to keep the vessel as steady as possible

Detach or cover the windscreens

Secure the hatches and portholes

Remove objects that are not permanently installed to prevent them from becoming projectiles

While minor, cosmetic damages may still occur, taking some time to prep your boat can help prevent major, structural damages. And if damages do occur, you can take care of it after the storm passes by filing a claim on your boat insurance. Your independent insurance agent can help you get back on the water as soon as possible.

We’ve got your back. Call Auto Insurance Express at (417) 206-3733 for more information on Joplin boat insurance.
