Items to Keep on Your Boat for Safety

boat in waterAs spring blossoms across the country, boaters are growing more anxious to get back on the water. But before you barrel down to the marina on the first warm, sunny day, take a moment to prepare. There’s an inherent danger to being on open water and it’s best to consider these risks so you can bring the appropriate equipment to minimize them. Here are a few items that you should always bring with you while boating.
  • Lifejackets: Before leaving the marina, ensure that there is an appropriately sized lifejacket for everyone on board. Both adults and children should have access to lifejackets. In fact, children should wear them at all times when on a boat.

  • Radio and cell phone: Whether you’re lost, trying to signal another boat or in the midst of an emergency situation, the ability to communicate—both with other boaters and the marina—is vital.

  • First aid supplies: While a fully stocked first aid kit is best, you’ll at least need the basics so you can treat cuts and scrapes.

  • Anchor: Anchors are essential for every boat, from preventing drifting to keeping from colliding into the shoreline.

  • Rope: While mainly used for docking, rope is also used for towing, tying down equipment on deck during bouts of rough waters and various other tasks.

  • Tools: Keeping a few basic tools onboard can help you out in a pinch. A multi-tool can be useful for quick repairs. Cable ties and duct tape can help with broken items until replacements are purchased. Flashlights help with both nighttime visibility and signaling for help.

  • Blanket: After a day on the water, you may find that it cools down considerably once the sun sets. Keeping a few blankets and towels onboard is handy for when you need to warm your body temperature after swimming.
Stay safe on the water. Call Auto Insurance Express at (417) 206-3733 for more information on Springfield MO boat insurance.
