You probably have a comprehensive RV insurance policy that covers you in case you get into a serious situation this summer, but it's essential to do your best to prevent having to make a claim in the first place. While this may sound like a way to help insurance companies profit, it's also in your best interests. Every claim you make costs you lost time with family and possible lost wages as you work to get back on the road.
To reduce the chances of needing to make an RV insurance claim this summer, follow these safety tips.
Maintain your RV: It seems simple and hopefully you can say that you've already been doing this. But a lot of people skip regular visits to their mechanic because of the cost. However, math tells you that a $99 routine inspection that finds you need a $50 part can spare you towing fees and a full blown repair that costs hundreds or even thousands.
Keep the grill a safe distance from your RV: Also, note nearby hazards like trees or tall grass that could catch fire easily.
Ensure food is kept at proper temperatures: Food poisoning is a serious danger and it’s more prevalent in summer when people enjoy eating outside in the sun. Follow FDA guidelines and keep cold foods at 40 degrees or below and hot foods at or above 140 degrees.
Consume clean drinking water: If you have any doubt about the quality of your water, invest in a water purifier so that you always have access to clean water. Don't forget to consume plenty of water (this does not include tea, juice, soda or coffee) each day to stay hydrated and healthy.
Lather on the sunscreen: When you venture out of the comforts of your air conditioned RV, be sure to protect your skin by putting on a high SPF sunscreen. Young kids and those with fair skin burn most easily, so consider also wearing light weight long sleeve tops and pants, as well as wide brimmed hats, to further protect your skin.
Research your destination: Traveling somewhere new on the fly is fun, but do take precautions and make sure that you research your destination and know how to arrive there safely.
