What You Need to Know About Renting an RV

rows of RVsIn recent years, there's been a trend to skip the family vacation in favor of a more affordable stay-cation. As the economy recovers, more people are venturing away from home, but still looking for budget-friendly options that let them have better control over the costs. One way to do this is by taking a short RV trip in order to avoid expensive hotel rates and unhealthy restaurant meals. Before renting an RV and hitting the road, here are four things to do to prepare for your trip.

Get a Contract: When renting from an RV dealership or rental company, you'll certainly get a contract; but if you opt to rent or borrow from a friend, get all of the details in writing. Write down the starting mileage, the fees that they're charging you (both the per day and per mile fees, if any), the current state of the vehicle and anything that is already damaged or in poor condition. Print two copies and sign and date both for your personal records.

Take out RV Insurance: While your auto insurance may partially cover you for an RV rental, you should take out a short-term RV insurance policy to ensure that you're fully covered in the event of a break down or accident. Policies are affordable and are well worth the peace of mind knowing that you're covered, even if you don't need to make a claim.

Learn to Drive the RV: It can be tough driving a large, extra-long vehicle. Allow for some practice time, both on the road and off. Go to a mall parking lot after hours and practice driving, maneuvering it around and parking so that you're confident in your driving ability before you hit the road.

Know How to Maintain the Vehicle: Dumping the waste water, running the air conditioner and using the propane stove are just a few of the things you need to know how to properly use and maintain while traveling by RV. Ask the owner of the RV to give you a thorough tour of the RV. Don't be afraid to take notes as you walk through; later, you'll be glad you have something to refer back to when you're having a momentary brain freeze and can't remember the steps to change the water.

Your independent insurance agent can help you find the appropriate RV insurance policy you need to prepare for your trip. Don’t hesitate to call anytime for assistance.
